Two training courses are currently available:

TACKLING THE SHARP END From Violence to Respect

A training course for practitioners who work to reduce violence, conflict and abuse in relationships.

This forty eight hour course offers skills and approaches for Counsellors, Health, Welfare and community workers in working to end violent and abusive behaviour.

The course concentrates on the approach pioneered by Alan Jenkins in 'Invitations to Responsibility'. Participants will learn how to create an environment in which people who use violence can take responsibility for their behaviour and work for their own change.

While this approach is the core of the course, a host of other themes and subjects integral to working in the Family Violence field are presented. These include:

  • Safety
  • Responsibility
  • Working with respect
  • Types of violence, power and control
  • The impacts of violence
  • Invitational approach
  • Appropriate self-disclosure
  • Anger management
  • Group work and counselling interventions
  • Social Construction of Gender
  • Narrative Therapy, an introduction
  • The range of approaches and theories
  • M&F Centre MEND structure and practice
  • Support and accountability to victims

The course is designed with a great deal of skills practice and discussion of the issues involved in working to stop violence. Theory is presented with written material and references. Participants will be expected to take part in all skills practice exercises which will involved a degree of appropriate self-disclosure.

Tackling the Sharp End is often delivered in areas other than Lismore. Usually this takes the form of three 2-day intensives. Please contact training@menandfamily.org.au for further information.

The next Lismore based course begins in March 2010 at the Men & Family Centre. The cost of the course is $990 including GST. Some scholarships may be available. To book a place call (02) 6622 6116 or email training@menandfamily.org.au

See the MEND Survey Report for the results of a 2006 survey giving both quantitative and qualitative data on the success of the MEND program.

SKILLED MATES 1

A skills-based course designed by men for men.

Skilled Mates is a skills-based course for men who are interested in learning more about working with, and supporting men in their relationships, whether they be work, family or recreational.

It is a course designed by men for men. The course acknowledges and recognises the challenges that men face in today's world of rapid change and changing social responsibilities, and provides a space for participants to develop a range of skills and knowledge. No previous experience or knowledge is required - only a willingness to learn, explore and listen.

Community Mates is designed for men & women together. It is a broader course than Skilled Mates and usually delivered in partnership with other organisations.
